Overview
ExitBase is a crowdsourced database of severance package data, anonymous by default. People who have been through a layoff or separation share the terms they received so that the next person can compare and negotiate with leverage. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use ExitBase, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using ExitBase you agree to the practices described below.
Information you provide
- Severance report content. When you submit a report we store the fields you fill out — company, industry, role, level, location, separation date, tenure, total experience, the reason for separation, compensation figures (base, total comp), the terms of your severance (weeks, amount, equity treatment, COBRA/healthcare, bonus, PTO, outplacement, non-compete, non-disparagement), whether and how you negotiated, and any free-text notes you add.
- Attached documents. If you attach an offer letter or separation agreement on the submit form, the file is uploaded to our document storage. We use it to verify the data in your report and to improve aggregate accuracy. Attached documents are not displayed publicly.
- Anonymity toggle. The submit form defaults to anonymous. If you leave it on, no email or identifying account information is stored alongside your report.
- Contact email (optional). If you turn off anonymous mode and provide a contact email, we store it so we can follow up with clarifying questions about your submission. It is never displayed publicly.
Information we collect automatically
- Cookies. ExitBase sets a single cookie to remember whether you have shared a report, so you can browse data freely after contributing. We do not use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.
- Logs. Our infrastructure providers record standard request logs (IP address, timestamps, user agent, error traces) to operate, secure, and debug the service.
How we use information
- To run the service: store and display severance reports, power search and aggregate statistics on the Browse page, and render company- and role-level summaries.
- To keep the service trustworthy: review attached documents to verify submissions, investigate abuse reports, and enforce our Terms of Service.
- To communicate with you: if you provided a contact email, we may reach out about your submission, send important service notices, or notify you of material changes to these policies.
- To improve the product: analyze aggregated, de-identified data to fix bugs and decide what to build next. We do not sell personal data to advertisers.
What other users see
ExitBase is anonymous-by-default. Reports are published without any identifier tying them to a person; uploaded documents and contact emails are never shown to other users. The fields you fill out on the submit form (company, role, level, location, severance terms, notes, etc.) are visible to other users and are aggregated into the company and role pages. Treat any information you put into a report as public.
Service providers
We use cloud infrastructure providers to host our database, store uploaded documents, and serve the public site. These providers process data on our behalf under their own data protection terms. Standard request and error logs are kept by our hosting provider for security and debugging. We do not share your data with advertising networks.
Data retention
- Published severance reports are kept indefinitely so the dataset remains useful over time. Removing a report removes its content from the public site; an internal record may be retained for moderation and audit purposes.
- Attached offer letters and separation agreements are retained for as long as the associated report is published, and are deleted (or anonymized) when the report is removed.
- Contact emails are retained until you ask us to remove them or the associated report is removed.
- Server logs are retained for a limited window by our infrastructure providers for security and debugging.
Your choices
- You can leave the “Post anonymously” toggle on when submitting a report — in that case we do not collect a contact email or any other identifier with your submission.
- You can decline non-essential cookies via the cookie banner. ExitBase only uses a single consent cookie and a submission cookie; declining does not affect your ability to browse.
- You can request that a report you submitted be removed, or that an attached document or contact email be deleted, through our contact page. Because submissions are anonymous by default, we don't automatically know which report belongs to you — we'll ask you to share details only the original submitter would know before we remove it.
- If you are in a region that gives you specific data rights (for example, the EEA, UK, or California), you can exercise those rights by contacting us through the same page.
Children
ExitBase is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has submitted information, please contact us and we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you in the product or by email. Continuing to use ExitBase after a change means you accept the updated policy.
